Moron fucks up another column
As of this writing, 96 Americans have been killed in October — the highest single-month total in more than a year.
Actually, this amount MATCHES November 2005 - which is obviously within the last 12 months. Well, obvious to those of us who don't FUCK UP their stupid newspaper column and have a bunch of incompentent schmucks proofreading it.
October has repeatedly been referred to as "the bloodiest month in Iraq in two years". There is a DNC ad circulating on the Internet stating this "fact". Yet that is not true. November 2004 had 137 KIA. January 2005 has 107 KIA. At this time, October 2006 is 99. And with two days left in the month, it doesn't look like the higher number will even be matched, much less exceeded.
Also, the number of wounded is significantly lower. By about 600+ when I checked yesterday. Again, the Democrat statement is FALSE.
http://icasualties.org/oif/woundedchart.aspx
In fact - in October 2005 - KIA in Iraq was 96. This year, October KIA is 99. Does that sound like a significant increase to you? Of course not.
There is no significant increase in the amount of KIA in Iraq. In fact, as I stated in a previous post - the KIA per month/day is the lowest of any war in U.S. history.

Edwards: We will be united with this President throughout the war on terrorism.
YouTube Video - O'Reilly Factor in October 2001
Oreilly: When this war widens, and it will, and Saddam Hussein comes into play, and maybe Libya, and maybe Syria, and maybe the Sudan and maybe even Iran, when all these come into play, are we going to be as united as we are now?
Edwards: Oh, I think we will be.
OReilly: Really?
Edwards: Yeah I think, I think...
OReilly: You guys aren't going to give Bush a hard time?
Edwards: I think that we will be united with this President throughout the war on terrorism.

Is waterboarding a war crime?
It seems Ted Kennedy made a speech in Congress somewhere around September 28, 2006 about Yukio Asano being charged with war crimes for water torture.
Check this post cached on Tailrank called I Was Duped by Kennedy.
It seems that Yukio Asano was charged for multiple war crimes. Among them were burning people with cigarettes, kicking, punching, clubbing and otherwise hitting prisoners of war.
I guess Mr. Kennedy forgot to mention that part.

Police find no report of a Foley dorm incident
Washington Post story
I'm shocked!
I'm shocked!
In an Oct. 3 letter to House Clerk Karen L. Haas, Rep. Deborah Pryce (R-Ohio) said a fellow GOP lawmaker had cited "rumors that there was an incident within the last several years when then-Congressman Foley in an intoxicated state was stopped by the Capitol Police from entering the Page Residence Hall."

Is media ignoring Log Cabin Republican's statement on Foley?
Statement by Log Cabin Republican:
Rogers and Avarosis out Foley in 2004
Interesting paragraph at the end of the same article
We support efforts to have an outside investigation to thoroughly examine Foley's wrongdoings and the Congressional leadership's response. It's important to find out if Congressional leaders responded appropriately to his behavior. It's also critical to find out if Democrats held onto information about Foley in an effort to use as it as a political tool as the election approaches. Unduly politicizing this situation will backfire on Democrats like Mary Jo Kilroy who is raising the issue in her race against Log Cabin ally and Congresswoman Deborah Pryce in Columbus, Ohio.
We also criticize those who are using this scandal to push their outing efforts of gay Republicans. Log Cabin unequivocally opposes outing. I am unaware of a single forced outing that led to passage of one piece of pro-gay legislation. Coming out on your own terms with courage is a positive catalyst for change. Forced outings don't advance our movement because they're motivated by vengeance and they distract us from what's really important. Those who are trying to out gay Republicans should be ashamed.

Media continues to keep a bag over their head on CREW scandal
Full Story
No one seems to know what the FBI is actually investigating in the media. I am not sure how they could have missed this October 6, 2006, Washington Post article.
Drudge Reports that the explicit IMs were with an 18 year old former page.
What, exactly, is the FBI investigating?
Foley, or the George Soros-funded group, CREW?
No one seems to know what the FBI is actually investigating in the media. I am not sure how they could have missed this October 6, 2006, Washington Post article.
In subsequent days, unidentified Justice and FBI officials told reporters that the e-mails provided by CREW were heavily redacted and that the group refused to provide unedited versions to the FBI. One law enforcement official -- speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation -- also told The Washington Post the FBI believed that CREW may have received the e-mails as early as April and that the group refused to tell the FBI how they were obtained.
Justice Department spokesman Brian Roehrkasse declined to comment on that issue but defended the FBI's handling of the original e-mails: "The e-mails, while inappropriate, did not contain a criminal predicate to allow the FBI to move forward in an investigation."

Meet Brian Ross - not a blogger - but he does have a "blotter"

Give me a break. You're a blogger! A blotter is a BOOK. It uses blotter paper. Is your website "a book"?
Paul Burglin on Wikipedia's Mark Foley entry
Paul Burglin made the following quote on Wikipedia on October 8, 2006.
His website (linked first here and linked in the post on Wikipedia) gives his business address as San Rafael located in the San Francisco Bay Area. Jordan Edmund, the now 21 year old former page was in CA in 2003 according to his MySpace webpage. At the time, he was a former page.
Mark Foley's reported behavior is symptomatic of an individual forced to lead a life of secrecy since adolescence. As a means to survive in a society that rejected his homosexuality, he became conditioned to say one thing and do another. His contempt for society's moral code allowed him to abuse its trust without remorse.
The lesson to be learned from Mark Foley is that shaming and harassing teenagers into the closet breeds lies and contempt that ultimately hurt all of us.

Dear Mark Foley,
It really is a shame that as an out gay man you are spending your first National Coming Out Day today in "rehab" (wink, wink). But really, Mark, perhaps it's best that you stay out of the limelight for now, because besides the fact that gays don't want to claim you, your coming out story is a tragic tale.
If oppressive religious bigots had their way, every gay man would live like you did, Mark. They aren't so much against the idea of homosexuality, they just don't understand why they have to acknowledge its existence. Between Beverly LaHaye saying kids of gay parents are better off born into a sham family and Ex-Gay practitioners saying how happy a gay person will be if they only pretend to be straight, it's obvious that they Just Don't Want To See It. They want to put us in a closet with the rest of society's skeletons, and they don't care whose life is destroyed in the process.
They fear it because they don't understand it, and it just creeps them out. (Hey, I don't blame them. Every time I see two heteros kiss in a Big Red commercial, I get kinda queasy myself. I don't mind straight people, I just don't understand why they have to flaunt their sexuality. ) They would much rather gay men like you and me remain quiet, hidden, out-of-sight. They want us to deny our own existence so they can comfortably ignore us.
But that's tough to do, isn't it Mark? It's tough to suppress sexual feelings. After all, human sexuality is a driving factor in all that we do. When we are not allowed to nurture our natural human sexuality properly, it can destroy us. My guess, Mark, is that you just never grew up. I don't think your misdeeds were so much a matter of power, and it certainly wasn't pedophilia. I think it was a matter of sexual feeling misplaced toward youth because you never allowed your sexuality to mature. You longed for your own romantic youth. I bet you actually cared for these young guys, Mark. That's the reason you were co-chair of the Congressional Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus, wasn't it? You wanted to protect these young men from the real predators, not from a caring father-figure like yourself. Oh, how ugly it must have been fooling yourself that way.
The ultimate point is you used the government page program that asks parents to entrust their kids' well being in congress as your own personal farming operation to find underage guys you perceived to be gay, hot, or interested. Then you contacted them once they got home and hoped to hook up with them when the became "legal." While it's still a question whether you've done anything illegal, it's pretty creepy, man, and certainly conduct unbecoming anyone who uses the word "The Honorable" in his title. (I mean I knew there were chickenhawks in congress, but still.)
Mark, THAT ISN'T HEALTHY SEXUAL BEHAVIOR. You must have been begging to get caught. That amount of hubris either comes from a feeling of absolute power or self-destruction. Were you crying out to be able to be out? Were you so desperate to not disrupt your Republican Lifestyle on the surface that you had to unconsciously risk everything in order to be who you really are?
Because uptight fundamentalists are bugged by actually acknowledging reality, they've manipulated their religion into an oppressive weapon. Along the way, Republicans like yourself sold out their conservative party to these fundamentalists and have risked turning America into a theocracy during one of our most trying times as a country. It must have been getting tough on you, Mark, to pick up that gay-bashing weapon to win votes. Was that weapon getting so heavy on your shoulders that you were willing to get caught in a scandal that will end up being the nails in the Coffin of Republican Congressional Rule? Wow! Talk about self-destructive behavior. You've brought the whole government down with you!
It was when you started to be called "disgraced" and "a pedophile" that you were willing to say, through your lawyer, that you are "a gay man." Well, Mark, I guess it's a start. It's a horrible start following possibly the worst gay coming out story ever, but it's a start.
I only hope that young gay men, lesbians, and all those questioning whether they have "normal" sexuality look at your sad tale as a warning on how living a lie can be so destructive inside and out. Will you emerge from rehab with new found understanding that you only have one life, and you have to live it honestly in order to be happy? Will you level us with excuses and accusations so common to a Republican Lifestyle, or will you allow yourself to be an example of Who Not To Be?
You only have one life, Mark. How are you going to live it now?
Happy Coming Out Day.

Quite obviously a setup

This is an image posted as part of this story on Americablog by John Aravosis called GOP congressman admits to, says nothing wrong with, creepy email exchange with 16-year-old page posted mid-afternoon September 28 on Americablog and September 24 on Stopsexpredators.blogspot.com.
Other emails that look suspiciously fabricated appeared on September 21 - and one of the senders was W_H_Intern. The rest are a variation of that theme. WHInternNow had posted on DailyKOS in September 5 about Foley and underage interns (as reported previously).
Look at the timeline - July 11 and 21 - stories about Foley and sex predators.
(Coincidentally, July 21, 2006 was the day that Foley's child sex predator protection bill passed Congress. It was also the day that CREW forwarded the FBI the emails dated in July/August 2005.)
The first post on Stopsexpredators.blogspot.com appears on July 28, 2006.
This is the blog, that "broke" the story to ABC. Avarosis and Rogers have set this up since 2003 and the evidence is stored right on their blogs!
Oh ABC, say it isn't so?
Update: Of interest: Avarosis reported on the ABC story within the hour of it breaking on Sept. 28th. However, his Americablog post of that day did not contain the ABC-released redacted PDF files of the emails.
It contained the unredacted image files and did not offer the source for them. However, he did state: "I received copies of these emails several months ago, but couldn't confirm their veracity so I did not report on them."
(They appeared that way on Sept. 24th on StopSexPredators.blogspot.com).
Latest story probably not on ABC: Teens attack gay man
Full Story
Four young men were arrested for luring a gay man to a remote location with an online promise of a sexual encounter, then attempting to rob him -- an incident that left the victim in critical condition after he ran into traffic to escape the attack, a police commander said Wednesday.
The four, who range in age from 16 to 20, were arrested late Tuesday, according to a police commander who spoke on condition of anonymity because the charges were still pending. Police had said they were investigating the Sunday attack as a possible bias incident, but it remained unclear whether the four would be charged with a bias crime.
Police sources said it appears the men had arranged, through e-mail, to meet the victim in a popular gay hangout, under the guise of having sex with him, but actually planned to rob him. They had told him to bring money in case they went to a hotel room, the sources said.
The victim, Michael Sandy, 28, a designer for Ikea from East Williamsburg, is still in critical condition and on a respirator at Brookdale Hospital.
New posts another bust, ABC trying to make story stick
Today, Mike Rogers "outted" Ed Shrock, which I reported he outted in 2004 in the Washington Blade (as well as Foley) some time ago. See this link.
He also "outted" a staff secretary who had a public profile on MySpace - not a significant contributor to public policy.
ABC, meanwhile, has focused its stories on the FBI interview of Jordan Edmund. But what, exactly, is the FBI investigating? As reported previously, the Washington Post quoted the FBI as saying:

...Law enforcement officials said the allegations by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) are without merit, and they stood by allegations that the group had refused to provide some information to the FBI...

ABCNews changes its tune?
ABC today, took the Foley story off of their #1 spot on their website, www.abcnews.com.
It has dropped to #2. However, the tone of the story has now changed, diminishing the importance of the Mark Foley scandal, instead saying that the more important issue is the dissatisfaction with the Republican party over the war in Iraq and the North Korea nuclear testing.

North Korea may test nuclear bomb this weekend
Full Story
(Filed: 06/10/2006)
North Korea may carry out a nuclear test as early as this weekend, according to a senior Japanese diplomat.
Shotaro Yachi, the Japanese deputy foreign minister, made the claim after talks with US security officials in Washington.
Japan has said that it is stepping-up monitoring of its neighbour as a contingency, though it has no solid information that a test is imminent.
On Tuesday the Stalinist state said it was preparing to trial a nuclear device, in an apparent attempt to blackmail America into dropping economic sanctions.
Some analysts have suggested that a test could come as early as Sunday, the anniversary of Kim Jong Il's appointment as head of the Korean Workers' Party in 1997.
Mr Yachi said: "Based on the development so far, it would be best to view that a test is possible this weekend."
Japan has two intelligence-gathering satellites and launched a third in September that can monitor the North's nuclear weapons and missile programs.
On Wedneday the US detected activity in North Korea indicating possible preparations for an underground nuclear test. Spy satellites have picked up unusual movement of vehicles at potential test sites.
Another exemplary example of LNP dishonesty
First, I want to say that in some respects, I agree with Gil this week. People are drasticly overreacting to those killed in the Amish school shooting. Is there really any reason to fly American flags at half mast?
On the other hand, the article did contain factual errors about Iraq that for some reason - are completely ignored.
Wrong!
Violence in Iraq leaves 52 dead - AP Press
This story spans over several days, with deaths reported spanning more than a single day and was written on October 4, 2006. It quite clearly announces incidents on Tuesday and Wednesday and as far back as the previous week.
The Amish school shooting was on Monday, October 2nd.
Icasualties.org reports 9 KIA on that date. None of them were Amish school girls.

as horrific as the death of five Amish children was, that same day 52 people were killed in Iraq — but in our hypernationalism, their blood is irrelevant.

Mystery blogger not so mysterious
Confidential sources are telling me that Michael Rogers may actually not run the StopSexPredators.blogspot.com website directly, but he might know the "mystery blogger".

Alright. Does this story make any sense?
The initial page emails, as they appear on Stop Sex Predators, were posted on September 21, 2006 at 6:25AM. But Rogers received them slightly before that by gmail from the admin of SSP (how did he get Roger's name and email, btw?).
But if the admin in the email told Rogers about the emails for the first time (Rogers claims that he received this email "slightly before it was posted" - how could he claim they were posted on Stop Sex Predators "as well?". They weren't posted yet!
Michael Rogers - you are a terrible, terrible liar. Give it up, man!
TUCKER CARLSON: “Radar” magazine had an interesting item last night, writing about a site called stopsexpredators.blogspot, which appears to be the original site on which a number of these exchanges first surfaced. It‘s not clear who runs this site, it‘s not clear who owns it, what the purpose of it is, but it‘s clearly an orchestrated effort to torpedo Foley.
Are you behind this site?
MICHAEL ROGERS, GAY ACTIVIST & BLOGGER: I am absolutely not behind the site stopsexpredators.blogspot.com. Absolutely not.
I did receive the e-mails a little bit before they went up on Stop Sex Predators, and the Stop Sex Predators site administrator apparently, from an Gmail account, claiming that, told me about them, that they were posted there as well. And then when I had first received them I made sure that I immediately confirmed that they had been handed over to the proper law enforcement authorities prior to my obtaining
them.
Dem-Run Congress Could 'Help Destroy Economy,' Analyst Says
By Randy Hall
CNSNews.com Staff Writer/Editor
October 06, 2006
(CNSNews.com) - Democrats on the campaign trail are promising that if they win control of Congress on Nov. 7, they will "jump-start our economy" through such measures as raising the minimum wage and ending the Bush tax cuts, but a conservative analyst said that enacting those policies could instead "help to destroy our economy."
"Choices made by President Bush and Republicans in Congress have created a market failure," said House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi during a speech in Washington, D.C., on Thursday. "They have consistently rewarded wealth without rewarding work.
"This economy is making the super-rich richer and leaving middle-class American families further behind, deeper in debt and struggling to make ends meet," the California Democrat added.
Pelosi's remarks echoed information at the House Democrats' website that promises the party will "jump-start our economy and reform our economic policy, designing it to address the needs of working families."
Charging that "8 million people are out of work, 1 million private-sector jobs have been lost since the beginning of the Bush administration, and long-term unemployment is at the highest level in 10 years," the Democrats put forward a plan to create a "New Direction" for economic growth that includes:
* An "Innovation Agenda" of policies and legislation that will create an educated, skilled workforce; invest in federal research and development; guarantee affordable access to broadband technology for all Americans; and achieve energy independence in 10 years by developing clean and sustainable energies;
* Middle-class tax cuts to put spending money in the pockets of average Americans;
* $32 billion in tax relief for small businesses to generate investment and jobs, as well as a permanent new tax break for companies to expand and create jobs in the U.S.
* Extended unemployment benefits; and
* "Pay As You Go" budgeting to ensure that new spending or tax cuts do not add to the deficit.
"We are committed to auditing the books and subjecting every facet of federal spending to tough budget discipline and accountability, forcing the Congress to choose a new direction and the right priorities for all Americans," the site adds.
Brian Darling, director of Senate relations for the conservative Heritage Foundation, told Cybercast News Service he is concerned that the Democrats' plan relies so heavily on "investments" and increased government spending, which could lead to higher taxes.
"We have a pretty low degree of taxation in our country, and it's no coincidence that our economy's good," Darling said. "In countries that have high taxation, the economies are terrible.
"If we want to regulate and force businesses to pay people more and tax the rich, that may make for good sound bytes and rhetoric, but it will help to destroy our economy if we're overtaxing individuals who are creating wealth," he noted.
"It's better that some individuals are amassing some wealth and that people can look forward to having some opportunity to amass their own wealth, rather than allow the government to amass wealth and spend it on wasteful government programs," Darling stated.
"If the minimum wage was to be hiked, and if the Bush tax cuts were repealed, and if more regulations were placed on our economy, it would turn around an economy that is doing very well," he said.
"Unemployment is under 5 percent, the Dow is soaring, gas prices are coming down, and the American people feel -- and they usually vote with their pocketbooks -- that Congress would be making a grave mistake if they took actions that hindered our economic growth," Darling noted.
Republicans also criticized Pelosi's speech and the Democrats' economic program.
"If there was any evidence that campaign season is in full swing, it's Nancy Pelosi's epiphany that tax cuts spur economic growth after years of leading the charge in tax hikes on American workers," said Tracey Schmitt, a GOP spokeswoman.
"The Democrat plan of heaping taxes on parents, families and employers has failed in the past and is an astonishingly foolish agenda for the future," Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) noted.
Darling also offered the GOP some advice as the mid-term election draws closer.
"The one real mistake I think Republicans are making is they're not talking enough about what's going on with the economy," he said. "It's doing really well, and a lot of these politicians are missing the big picture and not talking about how many of the Bush policies are helping to promote growth."
While acknowledging that "the Republican Party's made some mistakes" while in control of Congress -- such as "spending too much money" -- Darling noted that "whatever party wants to be in power in the future needs to have a vision of low taxation and low government expenditures."
"We need to reel in some of the expansion of the federal government. We need entitlement reform," he said. "I think potential Speaker Pelosi would never talk about entitlement reform or any of the other things that really need to be done."

Another closet case hurting the gay community. I am glad to know I had a role in pushing these emails out there. I've been working on the story for a few days and am excited it's out there now.
Tomorrow it's off to the FBI to request a full scale investigation of Rep. Mark Foley and his contacts with Congressional pages....
As it appears on his blogactive.com site from September 28, 2006, apparently referring to posts he had been making on stopsexpredators.blogspot.com for "a few days" before. I would not be surprised if we find that these Yahoo! and Hotmail accounts lead us back to Mr. Rogers...

Slacker Rendell: Nothing I can do about school security
Source
RUSH: There's an ongoing press conference taking place in Pennsylvania over this tragic shooting at the one-room Amish school. The governor of Pennsylvania, Fast Eddie Rendell, was there, and a very, very curious answer to this question from an unidentified reporter. "Governor Rendell, do you see any need for any changes in state public schools in terms of security?"
RENDELL: You can make all the changes you want, but you can never stop a random act of violence by a person who is intent on killing themselves. It's the same thing as protecting the president of the United States. You can have 50 Secret Service agents there, but if someone is willing to swap their life for the president's, they're going to get a point-blank shot at the president.
RUSH: Wow. (Laughing) As an addendum to this, the movie about the assassination of George W. Bush will open October 27th in various theaters here in the United States of America. Now, what a way to answer the question. Fast Eddie, you going to do anything to ramp up security at the schools? Nah, it won't matter. Somebody wants to come in and wipe out the president, you can't stop 'em. I mean, if they're willing to lose their lives in the process, nothing you can do. Governor Rendell, would you care to weigh in on your thoughts on port security? Well, there's really nothing you can do. If somebody's going to put a nuke in a container coming into ports and they're going to hide in the container with the nuke and set it off the minute that they're discovered, there's nothing much you can do.
Governor Rendell, Fast Eddie Rendell, what can we do here about airline hijackings? We just had another one. Turkish airliner was hijacked and landed in Italy. By the way, we've learned the motive for this now. The motive was the Islamists aboard were trying to make a statement about the pope's words. So Fast Eddie, what can we do about airline hijacking? Well, there's really nothing you can do. You could put 50 air marshals up there, you can put lead all over the cockpit door, but if somebody is willing to die in order to bring down the plane, there's nothing you can do. About the best thing you could do, Fast Eddie would say, is have a drink, you know, get an adult beverage, get a cocktail and say your prayers.
Fast Eddie, what about the prospect of terrorists hitting the electricity grid or maybe poisoning the water supply? Well, there's really not a whole lot you can do if somebody is willing to drink that water immediately after poisoning it and dying. I mean, you could have all the security you want at the ports, you could have all the air marshals up there in the sky, but if somebody's willing to wipe themselves out, there's not a whole lot you can do. Just like if you wanted to kill the president, 50 Secret Service agents couldn't stop it if the guy's willing to get up close, point-blank range, and die himself.
Now, that's gotta make you people in Pennsylvania awfully comfortable, when he gets a question about increasing security at the schools and basically says it won't matter. Is that what he said? He said, "Well, you can make all the changes you want but you can never stop a random act of violence by a person who's intent on killing themselves." Sounds to me like he doesn't think it's possible to stop these random acts of violence. I wonder if that extends to terrorism? Well, you know, you really can't stop these things, Fast Eddie would say. Strange stuff indeed.
CBS Terror Expert: Clinton Wouldn't Kill Osama
Bill Clinton created a big stir when he angrily defended his anti-terror efforts as president during an interview with Chris Wallace on "Fox News Sunday.”
But comments by a top anti-terror expert contradicting Clinton’s defense got far less attention in the liberal press.
The day after Clinton’s Sept. 24 tirade on Fox, Michael Scheuer — head of the CIA’s Osama bin Laden unit during the Clinton administration — said the al-Qaida leader "is alive today” because Clinton and his top aides refused to kill him.
"It's just an incredible kind of situation for the American people over the weekend to hear their former president mislead them,” Scheuer said about Clinton’s remarks.
Scheuer resigned from the CIA in 2004 after 22 years of service to publish "Imperial Hubris,” a blistering assault on the anti-terror policies of both Clinton and Bush.
"Although the intensity of [Clinton’s] outburst against Wallace was unplanned, he was ready to upbraid anybody who questioned his performance,” Robert Novak wrote in a column about Scheuer’s response. "Unexpected by him was a rebuttal by a CIA professional never confused with being a Bush acolyte.”
In his role as CBS News terrorism analyst, Scheuer appeared on the "Early Show” and said this about Clinton’s claim that the CIA could not verify bin Laden’s responsibility for the attack on the USS Cole: "The former president seems able to deny facts with impunity."
Scheuer continued: "He defames the CIA . . . and the men and women who risked their lives to give their administration repeated chances to kill bin Laden."
Asked if Bush was equally responsible for letting bin Laden escape from Tora Bora in Afghanistan, Scheuer replied: "The fact of the matter is that the Bush administration had one chance that they botched and the Clinton administration had eight to 10 chances that they refused to try. At least at Tora Bora, our forces were on the ground."
Novak wrote: "Scheuer's blunt remonstrance goes to the heart of what probably impelled Clinton's finger pointing on national television. Rather than attempting to shape the midterm campaign, as Republicans believe, he was interested in protecting his legacy. No former president in the last half-century has seemed so sensitive to critical assessments of his tenure.”

Did Democrats Page Mark Foley?
Scandal: Right after Mark Foley was revealed to have had inappropriate e-mail conversations with a 16-year-old page, he resigned and checked into rehab. Now, what did Democrats know, and when did they know it?
Yes, you read that right: the Democrats. It's of course clear that Foley, a Republican representative from Florida, resigned for good cause. We don't defend him or his inexcusable behavior -- good riddance.
But it didn't take long at all after Foley's resignation for the Democrats to call for an investigation of the entire Republican leadership in the House, charging that GOP stalwarts knew early on that Foley, as they like to say in the rehab business, had a "problem."
Democrats have begun losing their once-significant lead in the polls, and a mere five weeks remain until the midterm elections. Is this scandal the Democrats' own "October Surprise," meant to throw the GOP into a tailspin shortly before the vote?
Recent polls show Democrats aren't doing very well on several key issues. What better way than a good, old-fashioned sex scandal to get people's minds off such things as the importance of winning the war in
Iraq, our ongoing vulnerability to terrorist attack and the necessity of keeping the Bush economic boom going?
As it is, Republicans deny knowing about the explicit text messages that Foley sent to a 16-year-old congressional page back in 2003. In repudiating Foley, House Speaker
Dennis Hastert called the messages "vile and repulsive."
Despite this, the immediate take by Democrats and much of the mainstream media was that this was a classic example of Republican hypocrisy -- talking "morals" and "values" while all the time shielding a child predator. But it was nothing of the kind.
If anything, the episode reveals the Democrats' hypocrisy about their own behavior. The fact that Foley resigned virtually within minutes of being told that ABC News had copies of his salacious e-mails and text messages indicates he at least felt shame for his actions. Can the same be said for Democrats?
Sadly, it doesn't seem so. How else can you explain the following?
In 1983, then-Democratic Rep. Gerry Studds of Massachusetts was caught in a similar situation. In his case, Studds had sex with a male teenage page -- something Foley hasn't been charged with.
Did Studds express contrition? Resign? Quite the contrary. He rejected Congress' censure of him and continued to represent his district until his retirement in 1996.
In 1989, Rep. Barney Frank (news, bio, voting record), also of Massachusetts, admitted he'd lived with Steve Gobie, a male prostitute who ran a gay sex-for-hire ring out of Frank's apartment. Frank, it was later discovered, used his position to fix 33 parking tickets for Gobie.
What happened to Frank? The House voted 408-18 to reprimand him -- a slap on the wrist. Today he's an honored Democratic member of Congress, much in demand as a speaker and "conscience of the party."
In 2001,
President Clinton, who had his own intern problem, commuted the prison sentence of Illinois Rep. Mel Reynolds, who had sex with a 16-year-old campaign volunteer and pressured her to lie about it. (Reynolds also was convicted of campaign spending violations.)
You get the idea. Democrats not only seem OK with the kind of behavior for which Foley is charged, but also they protect and excuse it. Only when it's a Republican do they proclaim themselves shocked -- shocked! -- when it comes to light.
We have a lot more questions about this whole affair. The timing of the revelations, as we noted, couldn't be more propitious for the Democrats. Turns out both the Democrats and several newspapers seem to have known about Foley's problem as far back as November, according to research by several enterprising blogs.
Why didn't they come forward then? Who dredged up these e-mails -- and why did they hold them until now? This reeks of political trickery.
We're glad Foley's gone. He betrayed Congress, his party and the trust of the 33 pages who serve in Congress, and their parents. He behaved immorally, and we won't be surprised at new revelations.
That said, if this scandal is the Democrats' answer to their problems at the polls, it's pretty pathetic. It shows a base contempt for the voters.
I thought about this: this makes alot of sense.
The Dow is setting records. Gas prices are the lowest level in months. Instead of issues, why not throw a sex scandal at the GOP?
It's a disturbing thought, because it was at the expense of an individual believed by many to be gay. Many will say "but he's a pedophile". Well, I am not so sure. There are two individuals "below the age of 18". One was supposedly 17. One was supposedly 16. One of the boys (I presume the 17 year old) said he was turning 18 on Feb 23 according to Drudge report.
The locations of these "boys"? Well, it's not real certain but I have heard mentioned that they are pages (in Washington DC) and that one was from Louisiana (who might have weathered Hurricane Katrina). It has been stated that it is only two.
Well, the age of consent laws for DC and Lousiana could make a gay relationship between Foley and these pages perfectly legit. In Louisiana, it's 17 and DC is 16.
And why haven't we seen Foley marched off in handcuffs? Why didn't we see him hauled away in a police cruiser? What, exactly, is this man charged with?
If this is a Democrat trick, it's equally - if not more - disgusting that what Foley allegedly got himself involved in (even it was "legal"). Democrats have acuused time and again that we need to talk about issues and not be involved in people's personal sex lives (think inappropriate relationship with an intern).
Well, when are we going to talk about the issues? The record Dow. The low gas prices. The fact that we haven't faced a major terrorist attack in five years?
If true, it is truly despicable.
Dems Hypocrites on Sex Scandals
Full Story
While they react with fury over the scandal involving former Rep. Mark Foley, Democrats maintain a discreet silence over the numerous sex scandals that have rocked their own party.
And unlike Republican scandals like Foley's, where shame and resignation were the outcome, the Democrats' shameful behavior were either blithely ignored or jocularly accepted.
For example, former Chicago Democratic Congressman Mel Reynolds received a commutation of his six-and-a-half-year federal sentence for 15 convictions of wire fraud, bank fraud and lies to the Federal Election Commission. He also was convicted of having sex with an an underage campaign volunteer. But Jesse Jackson added Reynolds to Rainbow/PUSH Coalition's payroll.
Moreover, Reynolds was among the 176 criminals excused in President Clinton's last-minute pardon spree.
As Deroy Murdock, a columnist for Scripps Howard News Service, wrote back in 2002: "This is a first in American politics: An ex-congressman who had sex with a subordinate, won clemency from a president who had sex with a subordinate, then was hired by a clergyman who had sex with a subordinate. His new job? ... Youth counselor."
Of course, Murdock's "president" reference was to Clinton, who admitted to inappropriate sexual behavior with White House intern Monica Lewinsky; the "clergyman" was Jackson, who also had an affair with a former Rainbow/PUSH Coalition aide.
After receiving Clinton's pardon, Reynolds became a consultant for the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition on prison reform. He was employed as the community development director of Salem Baptist Church in Chicago.
More notorious was the case of Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., In 1989, male prostitute Stephen L. Gobie admitted that Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., knew that Gobie had operated a prostitution service out of Frank's Capitol Hill apartment. Frank, an openly gay member of Congress, confirmed that he had Gobie as a roommate in his apartment. Frank said he fired Gobie when he learned that clients were visiting his apartment.
Was Frank told by the Democratic leadership to resign his seat as Foley was forced to do?
Not at all. That was 17 years ago, and he is still a member of Congress, a respected member of the Democratic minority and is slated to assume the chairmanship of a key House committee should the Democrats recapture control of the House.
When former Rep. Gerry Studds admitted having sex with a teenage page, nobody in the Democratic leadership demanded he resign, nor did he offer to resign. He had a joint press conference with the boy and bragged about their affair. He was renominated by the Democrats and re-elected six times before retiring.
As Rush Limbaugh noted Monday, "The truth is that the people on the left who are acting all outraged and stunned and angry, they don't see what Clinton or Barney Frank or Gerry Studds did as repugnant. In fact, they view those things as private matters that didn't affect anybody's work, and it's nobody's business what somebody does with their private life, particularly when it comes to sex."
Unless it involves a Republican. Then it's a matter of outrage and hypocrisy.

Bush Confronts Critics of Iraq Policies
WASHINGTON (AP) - Gloves-off election-year rhetoric hit the radio Saturday, as President Bush argued that critics are wrongheaded to argue for a different policy in Iraq.
With just over five weeks to go before midterm elections in which GOP control of Congress could be at risk, Democrats have been citing a government intelligence assessment to bolster their criticism of Bush's approach to Iraq. The classified National Intelligence Estimate, parts of which Bush declassified earlier this week, says the Iraq war has contributed to a global growth in the terrorist movement, but it also says success there could drain jihadists of momentum.
The president has been fighting back against the Democratic attacks with a series of appearances, and he recycled many lines from earlier in the week in his Saturday radio address.
"Some in Washington have selectively quoted from this document to make the case that by fighting the terrorists in Iraq, we are making our people less secure here at home," Bush said. "Five years after the 9/11 attacks, some people in Washington still do not understand the nature of the enemy. The only way to protect our citizens at home is to go on the offense against the enemy across the world."
At a GOP fundraiser Thursday in Alabama, Bush said, "The party of FDR and the party of Harry Truman has become the party of cut and run."
He also charged in Alabama that "some in Washington, some decent people, patriotic people, feel like we should not be on the offensive in this war on terror," without offering any evidence of such remarks.
White House press secretary Tony Snow acknowledged Friday that no Democrats have said directly that they do not want to take the offensive against terrorists, but he defended Bush's no-holds-barred politicking.
"I think there's been a lot of ratcheting up of rhetoric on the other side where the president has been accused of everything from dereliction of duty to not caring about what happens to people who have been claimed on the battlefields," Snow said. "The point the president is trying to make is, there are going to be some clear choices."
Bush argued Saturday that maintaining the U.S. presence in Iraq is crucial to winning the broader war on terror.
"Our safety depends on the outcome of the battle in Iraq," he said. "Withdrawing from Iraq before the enemy is defeated would embolden the terrorists."

Who is being tortured?
Well, it looks like we are stuck on stupid. In an ironic twist of fate, today's coumn is about torture. (Kind of like reading this column week after week). If Gil was really all that concerned about torture, I would speculate that he could turn in his resignation to Lancaster Newspapers.
Today, it is mentioned that portions of a report were released "proving" terrorism is a growing threat and is spreading (even though we haven't faced a major attack here in five years).
Question: If "portions" of the report have been released, how can anything be made "clear" without reviewing the whole thing? It's almost like Democrats are taking excerpts, reading and projecting what they want to hear while ignoring the full story?
Sound familiar, Gil?
Of course, now we have the paranoid admission that it is believed we have "a legal framework by which dissent itself might be criminalized". Oh, I didn't realize that mass murdering 3,000 people on 9-11 was "dissent". Is blowing up planes "dissent"? Chopping off people's heads - "dissent"?
Is making veiled threats "dissent", Gil? Ask your boss what he thinks.

Is sprinkling someone with a watercan torture? Man, I must torture our flowers on a regular basis.
Question: why are we considering putting people who are not citizens of this country their "Constitutional rights"? Should they have Constitutional rights if they aren't citizens?
Can we destroy ourselves? Certainly. Those who are stuck on stupid can continue to run this country right into the ground with their boneheaded stubbornness.
Hopefully, most people will come to their senses and show others that it is intolerable on November.
