Bush lays smackdown on Congressional earmarks

Fact Sheet: President Bush Takes Unprecedented Steps to Advance Earmark Reform

Yeah - that earmark reform promised by the idiots in Congress (but not acted on) is now finally here - thanks to George W. Bush.

Let's all quietly watch the "mainstream media" stumble over themselves to report this story.

Groundhog Day approaches. Is it Octorara or Octoraro Orphie?

Quarryville is generally considered to be located in "Middle Octorara", where there is a Presbyterian church. According to "Along the Octorara", the word "Octorara" is predominently used since the creation in the 50's of the Octorara Area School District.

According to the US Navy, the USS Octorara was named for a creek in Pennsylvania which was named for an Indian word meaning running water.

Our word for "woodchuck" is also derived from the indian language (wojak).

In my opinion, the Quarryville groundhog should be spelled "Octorara Orphie". Octoraro is a creek and lake that is located in Colerain township, outside of Quarryville.

Sore Loserman: Bubba implies Obama is just like Jesse Jackson

Full Story on ABC

After a rousing stomp in South Carolina, Billary had this to say: "Jesse Jackson won South Carolina in '84 and '88. Jackson ran a good campaign. And Obama ran a good campaign here."

God is in numerous Constitutions, including the federal one

This is in response to Secular origin, sacred document.

CONSTITUTION OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA
WE, the people of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, grateful to Almighty God for the blessings of civil and religious liberty, and humbly invoking His guidance, do ordain and establish this Constitution.

Why shouldn't God be mentioned in the federal Constitution? "Almighty God" is mentioned in the state Constitutions of at least 30 U.S. states.

And, guess what? The Constitution does mention God. If you look at page 4, where the signatures appear, you will see this:

"Done in convention by the unanimous consent of the states present the seventeenth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty seven and of the independence of the United States of America the twelfth."

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

MLK was a great man. He fought for Civil Rights, against the wishes of Southern and border state Democrats - who filibustered Civil Rights legislation. Robert Byrd, a former KKK Klansman and current U.S. Democratic Senator filibustered Civil Rights legislation for 14 hours alone.

The landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 was created to protect voting rights—basically establishing them for the first time for many Southern black people—eliminate discrimination in public facilities and federally assisted programs, extend the Commission on Civil Rights, and create the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. On the 56th day of a filibuster intended to block the bill's passage, Byrd spoke for 14 hours and 13 minutes, concluding at 9:51 a.m. on the morning of June 10. Georgia's Richard Russell continued after Byrd stepped down from the podium, but he was cut off by a cloture vote.

Strom Thurmond holds the current filibuster length record in history. It was against Civil Rights legislation in 1957. At the time, Strom Thurmond was a Democrat.

Strom Thurmond's famous filibuster followed an eight-day filibuster by Georgia senator Richard Russell that resulted in watering down that year's civil rights bill, removing its enforcement provisions. As Jack Bass and Marilyn W. Thompson describe the situation in their book Ol' Strom, even though the bill was pretty much defanged, Thurmond was still hell-bent on fighting it. Southern Democrats agreed not to run an organized filibuster; they left it up to individual members to take up the battle. Thurmond decided to fight on alone, and to prepare himself, he took steam baths every day to dehydrate his body so it could absorb fluids without his having to leave the Senate chamber for the bathroom. On the day he was scheduled to start speaking at 9 p.m., he took another steam and told his staff to get ready. He was going to discuss provisions requiring trial by jury. (Civil rights advocates didn't like this, because Southern juries were practically all white.) Thurmond began speaking at 8:54 p.m. and didn't quit until 9:12 the next evening. It was the longest filibuster in Senate history.

When it comes to the Constitution, Gil knows better than God

Gil's Lastest and Not-so-Greatest

So it looks like Gil is sticking to his guns on the "Separation of Church and State" thing with the "high and impregnible wall" created by former Klansman and Justice Hugo Black. If he wants to agree with a former KKK member, I guess he is entitled to. After all, Democrats have elected a former KKK Kleagle a senior US Senator (See Robert Byrd).

Don't get me wrong. I know that Thomas Jefferson stated a "wall of separation between Church and State" in a letter to Danbury baptists - minus the "high and impregnible wall" part. However, what he wrote in the Constitution is what's there. It's called the First Amendment.

You heard it here first! Blogger attempts to use outdated 1874 law to hassle county officers

A local blogger claims that the oath of office was not taken by elected county officials. However, the law that is cited is outdated. According to PACode.com, many other surrounding areas have adopted this oath of office. Title 16 is no longer "County Code", but is renamed "Community Affairs" and Section 40.3 is "reserved and renumbered".

Updates:LNP: Judge confirms that local blogger is flat wrong.

Former PA Constitution (Check Article 7 Section 1)

The current PA Constitution (Check Article 6 Section 3)

Former Article VII, § 1 containing the old oath, was repealed in 1966, and present Article VI, § 3, with the proper oath, was adopted May 17, 1966.

You have got to be fucking shitting me

Pelosi pushes gourmet menu

The processed cheese has been replaced with brie. The Jell-O has made way for raspberry kiwi tarts and mini-lemon blueberry trifles. Meatloaf has moved over for mahi mahi and buns have been shunted aside in favor of baguettes.

A revolution is afoot at the deli counters, grills and salad bars of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Newly ascendant Democrats may have hit roadblocks on Iraq and fiscal issues, but they have revamped congressional menus, replacing fatty, pre-made foods with healthier, gourmet alternatives. The once dreary congressional cafeterias now abound with haute cuisine.

The menu transformation is part of Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s “Greening the Capitol” plan to make the House campus more environmentally friendly and socially progressive.

But there can be a downside to delicious. Not everyone is happy with the enhanced offerings. Many congressional employees have complained that as the food quality has increased, so have the prices.

“It’s a big jump from high school cafeteria to fancy-pants gourmet. I just wish my pay improved,” said Caryn Schenewerk, a staffer for Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.).

A fruit and cheese side dish with two small wedges of brie and cheddar, six grapes, two saltines and one strawberry cost $4.95, for example...

Clintons' statements upset blacks

Politico: Racial tensions roil Democratic race

Isn't the "Gulf of Tonkin" comparison sort of ignorant?

Alot of the media has been comparing the recent Strait of Hormuz incident with Iranian speedboats to that of the Gulf of Tonkin Incident in 1964. Is this really a valid comparison or is this just displaying the ignorance of those trying to draw some sort of abstract parallel?

For one thing, the Gulf of Tonkin Incident occurred well into the course of the Vietnam War. About 190 US fatalities had occurred in Vietnam prior to 1964.

Source

On the other hand, there is no war with Iran.

The Gulf of Tonkin incident resulted in a resolution which lead to an escalation of the Vietnam war. The Strait of Hormuz incident resulted in a stern warning.

The Gulf of Tonkin incident occurred under a Democrat President and a Democrat-dominated Congress. The Strait of Hormuz incident occurred under a Republican President and a do-nothing Democrat Congress.

The comparison seems kind of silly - but then again - we are talking about liberal moonmonkeys.

What a friggin' maroon

Oh, lookee, we got our own near-Persian Gulf of Tonkin incident.

Perhaps Iran really is stupid enough to “harass” the massive U.S. fleet in the Gulf. Sure would be convenient for the neocons who remain intent upon war with Iran if they were.

I previously commented on this little jewel on Gil Smart's Lancaster Online blog. But it just deserves so much more commentary.

The Gulf of Tonkin incident, which occurred in 1964, was under a Democrat President and a Democrat-controlled Congress. What a knucklehead for criticizing "neocons" for NOT doing what Democrats actually DID in 1964.

You would have thought the Democrats learned their lesson after electing Harry Truman - a man who never graduated college - to the US Presidency. You know, the man who a-bombed two Japanese civilian cities like an Al Qaeda terrorist would.

I'm not just saying this because she is a woman. Ron Paul had his share of public whimpering over Foxnews. I say, both of them can just call it quits tomorrow. Stop prolonging the inevitable.

Despite Iranian provocation, USA not at war with Iran, Gil disappointed

Gil printed a link to this little tidbit today on his blog.

Gil seems genuinely disappointed that this provocation has not led us to war with Iran. Is something mentally wrong with this man?

What is this big deal about Ron Paul and Foxnews?

Tonight at 8pm on Foxnews is a show called the "First-in-the-Nation Presidential Forum".

And while just about every other state's primary is after this forum, there is some big drama over Ron Paul allegedly being "excluded" by Foxnews from some "debate".

Nevermind that on January 10, 2008, Ron Paul will participate in Foxnews GOP Presidential Debate in South Carolina long before the South Carolina primary (and before nearly all state primaries).

Is it a lack of understanding of the primary process that has led Ron Paul and the liberal media to come to this ridiculous conclusion? One can only speculate...

You will notice that very few, if any, have mentioned ABC's exclusion of certain candidates as some sort of political trickery. How CONVENIENT?

Follow-up: NH primary polls, Ron Paul holds only single digit support in NH.

Latest column full of errors - again

Of all the enemies to public liberty war is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes. … No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare.
—James Madison, 1795

Gil's Column

Of all the enemies to public liberty, war is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded, because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes; ... No nation could reserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare.

Source - The Online Library of Liberty, A Project of the Liberty Fund, Inc.

Globalsecurity.org, which analyzes worldwide military and security trends, last week published a handy graph illustrating the gulf between what we, the United States, spend on our military versus the rest of the world. We don't merely outspend Iran — in 2008 we will outspend the rest of the world combined, $623 billion to everyone else's $500 billion.

You will notice that $500 billion is a 2004 estimate.

For a better comparison on military expenditures, visit this link which ranks the USA as #28 in the world.

Claim: We spend nearly 10 times what our nearest "competitor," China, spends.

Fact: The % GDP spent on military in China is 4.30%. The USA is 4.06%.

Claim: USA spending is almost 29 times as large as the combined spending of the six 'rogue' states (Cuba, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Sudan and Syria), who spent $14.65 billion.

Fact: Again, there is a comparison of 2008 figures with prior year estimates here. The USA is defending about 10 million square kilometers of land. Those six countries combined have one half the area and a smaller GDP to spend on military.

It doesn't take much, does it?

3 Years in Jail, Dem fundraising scam exposed

Dem vote scandal breaks

The guy on the left is sentenced to three years in prison for fundraising crimes. The guy on the right isn't.

Hsu also faces federal fraud charges in New York.

His troubles began dogging Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and other big-name Democrats last summer when news reports revealed he was a fugitive who fled the state before he was sentenced for the 1992 fraud conviction. He turned himself in on Aug. 31 -- then fled again.

He was recaptured in September in Colorado after he tried to kill himself by overdosing on drugs aboard an eastbound Amtrak train. Hsu has since been held without bail in a Redwood City jail.

I'd like to dedicate this song to...

The Moron Just Can't Seem to Get It

Gil came up with this little jewel today. So it was Fox's call?

Well, duh. It is Fox's call who is on their show. It's not a debate, it's a roundtable forum with Chris Wallace on January 6th, a day after the ABC debate - which Ron Paul is in! Ron Paul is also in the Foxnews GOP debate on Jan. 10th! Check their calendar, Gil! It isn't that hard to a little bit of fact checking instead of just taking for granted everything you read in a liberal (or libertarian) blog. Try it sometime, I recommend it.

Gil, say this with me nice and slow.

THERE IS NO FOXNEWS DEBATE ON JANUARY 6, 2008. IT WAS CANCELLED THREE WEEKS AGO.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — On the day she was killed, opposition leader Benazir Bhutto planned to give two U.S. lawmakers a dossier accusing the ruling regime and Pakistan's intelligence service of rigging upcoming elections, an aide said Tuesday.

Sen. Latif Khosa, a lawmaker from Bhutto's Pakistan Peoples Party, said she planned to meet Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania and Rep. Patrick Kennedy of Rhode Island on Thursday evening, a few hours after the rally where she was killed.

She was preparing to give the U.S. lawmakers a 160-page report of complaints on "pre-poll rigging" the government of President Pervez Musharraf and the military-run Inter-services Intelligence Service was engaged in, Khosa said.

"(She) herself was supposed to give it to them," said Khosa, who as head of the party's election team, wrote the report.

Khosa said he did not know if Bhutto's assassination was linked to the report.

"The elections were to be thoroughly rigged and the king's party was to benefit in the electoral process," he said, referring to the pro-Musharraf Pakistan Muslim League-Q party.
