Isn't the "Gulf of Tonkin" comparison sort of ignorant?

Alot of the media has been comparing the recent Strait of Hormuz incident with Iranian speedboats to that of the Gulf of Tonkin Incident in 1964. Is this really a valid comparison or is this just displaying the ignorance of those trying to draw some sort of abstract parallel?

For one thing, the Gulf of Tonkin Incident occurred well into the course of the Vietnam War. About 190 US fatalities had occurred in Vietnam prior to 1964.

On the other hand, there is no war with Iran.

The Gulf of Tonkin incident resulted in a resolution which lead to an escalation of the Vietnam war. The Strait of Hormuz incident resulted in a stern warning.

The Gulf of Tonkin incident occurred under a Democrat President and a Democrat-dominated Congress. The Strait of Hormuz incident occurred under a Republican President and a do-nothing Democrat Congress.

The comparison seems kind of silly - but then again - we are talking about liberal moonmonkeys.
