Dems student loan plan doesn't affect 43.2% of Stafford loans!
Full Story
Undergraduates took out $16.3 billion dollars' worth of subsidized Stafford loans in the 2004–05 school year, the most recent figures available. This academic year students may borrow between $3,500 and $5,500 worth of subsidized Stafford loans, depending on their financial need and year in school, up to an aggregate limit of $23,000. However, 43.2 percent of Stafford loans are unsubsidized. Those loans would not be affected by the proposed legislation. Unsubsidized Stafford loans are available to all students regardless of need and may continue to accumulate interest at a fixed rate of 6.8 percent while students are in school and after graduation.

House Democrats' Week in Review
First on the board for this week after appointing a former KKK Klansman to the #4 spot was HR 1. A bill that was supposed to implement all of the 9/11 Commission Recommendations but didn't.
H.R. 1
The 9/11 Commission Recommendations
To top it off, the Berger Report comes out about that time telling us that the 9/11 Commission did not get all the facts.
HR 1 - passed the House, but in my opinion FAILED
HR2 was supposed to raise the minimum wage to $7.25. This year, your wages will go up to $5.85 (in about 60 days). A year after that to 6.22 and finally - two years later - we will reap the benefits of the $7.25 minimum wage. Of course, by that time - your taxes will be that much higher so it doesn't really matter.
HR 2 - passed the House, but in my opinion FAILED
HR 3 was aupposed to "allow stem cell research". Embryonic stem cell research was ALREADY allowed. The real issue was federal funding for a process that killed an embryo. President Bush drew this ethical line in 2001 when he approved stem cell research federal funding. He has promised to veto this legislation. And although Pelosi was hoping for a veto-proof bill - she missed by a mile.
Not that any of this is really relevant anyone since recent advances in stem cell research and ambiotic fluid makes the debate pointless.
HR 3 - FAILS (but passed the House).
HR 4 - was supposed to give the government more power in bargaining on prescription drug prices. This one is too boring to mention - and if you actually saw any improvements in prices, I would be surprised.
HR 4 - FAILS
More failures:
Messing with the time clock
Stall pork-reform vote
Dems promise to work a five day work week but take off Monday for football.

I call a foul, Democrats are tampering with the time clock on the "First 100 Hours"
But just as the official clock for a basketball or football game stops for time-outs and commercial breaks, Democrats aren't counting the minutes spent on business unrelated to those six designated bills.

H.R. 3 DOESN'T GET A VETO-PROOF MAJORITY
H.R. 3 ROLL CALL VOTE
2/3RDS (OR 290)ARE NEEDED TO PRODUCE VETO-PROOF LEGISLATION. Democrats were unable to get a 2/3 vote.
Broaden the types of stem cell research allowed with federal funds _ "I hope with a veto-proof majority," she added in an Associated Press interview Thursday.

So, minimum wage increase will only be to $5.85.
According to H.R. 2, the minimum wage will be raised to $5.85 this year.
So much for "in one step". In Dems defense, they did say "maybe".

First 100 Hours Update
In about 3 hours, the "First 100 Hours" of Democrat rule come to an end. Literally.
If you started at 12 noon on last Thursday and looked at the clock at 4pm today, it would be 100 hours later.
However, I was informed that Democrats have 100 legislative hours to get these bills, which they introduced on Day One, passed.
So now, it is the "First 100 Legislative Hours".
I tell you what. I will give these Dems another chance. I will give them the "First 100 Legislative Hours", but only if we can count the legislative hours from last week, which is 19 hours. You can verify this on Http://www.house.gov by checking the start times and end times for each day.
Really, today should count, because Democrats promised to work a five day work week. However, they took this Monday off, reportedly because of football. Then legislation starts tomorrow around noon.
(We have important things to accomplish, so take the day off and come in late tomorrow!)
However, I will be even MORE generous and will not count this Monday, next Monday, or the other days they have crossed off on their calendar.
So let's give them a totally fair shake and see what they can do...I will see you sometime tomorrow afternoon when they finally get around to the "First 100 Hour" plan.
In the meantime, check what Democrat promises have been broken so far.

Majority Believe Iraq Coverage Biased, Who Woulda Thunk It?
Poll: Majority Believe Iraq Coverage Biased
Most Americans are convinced that media coverage of the conflict in Iraq is inaccurate and portrays the situation as being worse than it actually is, a new survey shows.
According to the Gallup News Service, a December survey of a representative sample of 569 adult Americans revealed that fully 56 percent believe that major news media coverage of the situation in Iraq is generally inaccurate while only 4 out of 10 Americans agree that it is accurate.
Moreover, the survey showed that by a 61 percent to 36 percent margin, those who feel that the Iraq coverage is inaccurate say it is because the media make the situation there appear worse than it actually is.
Responses from survey participants showed that two-thirds of Republicans believe that the news media's coverage of Iraq is both inaccurate and makes the situation there appear worse. Only one-quarter say that news media coverage is accurate.
On the other hand, a majority of Democrats (55 percent) say that news media coverage of the situation there is accurate, with most of the rest saying that it is inaccurate and biased toward making the situation there appear better than it really is.
Other survey results:
56 percent believe the news media provide an inaccurate account of the situation in Iraq while 41 percent see it as accurate.
35 percent believe the media makes the situation appear worse than it is, while only 20 percent think it makes the situation better than it is. Three percent had no opinion and 1 percent were unsure.
Broken down by party affiliation, barely 5 percent of Republicans think the media makes the situation appear better, while 25 percent of independents and 32 percent of Democrats take the position that it does.
Just 25 percent of Republicans think the coverage is accurate, but 42 percent of independents and as many as 55 percent of Democrats think it is accurate.
The survey results are based on telephone interviews with a randomly selected national sample of 1,013 adults, ages 18 and older, conducted Dec. 18-20, 2006. For results based on this sample, one can say with 95 percent confidence that the maximum error attributable to sampling and other random effects is ±4 percentage points.
For results based on the sample of 569 adults who say the news media have been providing an inaccurate account of the situation in Iraq, the maximum margin of sampling error is ±5 percentage points.

Democrats move First 100 Hours to next Tuesday
You think I'm kidding?
That's the funny part!

That's the funny part!
Initial reports from the office of incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., had the "100 hours" beginning today, as Democrats voted on a package for ethics reform, and continuing to Friday, when they are set to introduce rules on reforming congressional earmarks -- the spending projects often slipped surreptitiously into larger spending bills.
On Wednesday evening, however, Hoyer's office said that the "100 Hours" plan would actually begin Tuesday...
